The short history of Spirulina

in , , by The Red Beet, August 14, 2020

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that have been used since ancient times. This microscopic blue-green algae (also called cyanobacteria) has been on the planet for the past 3.6 billion years.

People used to eat spirulina in central Mexico or around the Lake Chad in Africa.

Spirulina used to float around lakes thousands of years ago. It gave the water a blue-green color.

In Africa we surely know that they still consume it up until today. Even the animals that live around Eastern Africa they know the benefit of this blue-green algae.

In Mexico the Aztecs* they added it to their daily diet. They collected from the lake with a fabric, then let it dry. The Spanish found spirulina grew on fresh water lakes, and was consumed by the Aztecs and Mayans as a regular addition to their meals.

Some source claim that spirulina was first discovered by Hernando Cortez and his Spanish Conquistadors in 1519 - in Mexico.

In Africa, 1940, a little known journal published a report by French phycologist Dangeard about the same superfood, but the report went unnoticed unfortunately.

In 1974, the United Nations declared spirulina as a superfood, as well as the FDA described it as the best supplement. In 1983, spirulina won the “best natural food” award at West Germany’s International Food Expo.

At these days, spirulina used in many dietary supplements because of its health benefits. It is being grown in the United States, Hawaii, Thailand, Taiwan, Chile, Vietnam, India, Japan, Cuba, Spain, Argentina, Mexico and other countries.

*Aztecs - The Aztecs were a people who came into the Valley of Mexico in the 12th century and quickly rose to become the dominant power in Mesoamerica. The capital of the Aztecs, Tenochtitlan, was built on Lake Texcoco on raised islands.  Spirulina was found in abundance at Lake Texcoco by French researchers in the 1960s, but no reference to its use was made by the Aztecs as a daily food source after the 16th century, probably due to the draining of the surrounding lakes for agricultural and urban development. - source: Wikipedia
